in hawaii, first lady michelle obama took phone calls from some lucky kids who are tracking the progress of santa claus through a site set up by norad. as it turns out, a record number of those kids and adults were looking for reel time updates on st. nick. as of midnight, trackers answered more than 111,000 calls. that is 4,000 more than last christmas. pretty cool. >>> major markets ended christmas eve on the downside, but who could be gloomy with santa on hand to ring the bell. chris botti jazzed up the stock exchange with a little christmas cheer. some 17 million shoppers were out yesterday with gift cardeds, wine and liquor topping last minute flicks. netflix suffered a massive outage which it blamed on the cloud network. acer is reportedly looking to launch a $99 tablet early next year. >>> if you are looking for last minute gift or maybe a bite to eat this morning it, starbucks, ihop and equal green's should all be open today. >>> it will be a short merry christmas for members of congress with the country perched on the precipice of what some are calling fiscal disaster. lawmakers

in hawaii and, yes, christmas brings us one day closer to possibly the fiscal cliff, the huge tax increases, spending cuts that could take effect in one week or so. brianna keeler is watching there in hawaii, joining us with the update. first of all, how is the president, how is the first family spending the holiday? >> presumably right now they are sleeping in, suzanne, because it is still very early here as you know. >> what time is it? >> we are expecting of course they'll have a christmas. let's see. 6:00 in the morning bright and early. we've been at it for a few hours. we expect them to have a nice christmas meal at the house they're renting. the white house chef is here. maybe we'll get details on what they are going to eat. there is nothing on the president's public schedule. he is frequently gone and visiting with troops in the past so we wouldn't be surprised if he did that again today. i will tell you that bo the dog is actually along for the ride here in hawaii and the white house released a video where bo just really kind of steals the show. let's look at a little of that. this

. it has a tropical connection, because it's coming from the direction of hawaii, but still a mid and northern latitude situation. seattle and portland seeing some rain, snow at the higher elevations. if anything is a saving grace, it's a little cooler this go-around, so some of the moisture getting locked up in higher elevations in the form of snow. most of that is well north of san francisco and napa valley. this will sink further south, we'll get another piece of energy later on today that will spin up across the bay area and intensify the rainfall. that's what we will be watching closely. our computer models highlight that. one pulse to the north. another one fills in further to the south. it shouldn't be nearly what we saw last week. the ground is saturated. rivers are swollen. it won't take much to get more in the way of flooding. once we get past that, we are looking at a fairly dry scenario going over the next few days. today is the day. then tomorrow we'll hopefully be breathing a sigh of relief. >>> this morning intense fighting in syria outside the city of aleppo. rebel

. the president is going off to hawaii shortly. they maybe have two weeks left, and it's not the time to get through a complex policy issues because you will give them the short shrift. i think they should extend them for some time, whether that is when this the art expires. that gives them the more hard times when things, you know, hard deadlines when issues need to be addressed. i do think that there are these -- and i mentioned them. because we work together for so long, there are listed everywhere that i would. these are strongly agree to a bipartisan issues, raise the retirement age for medicare, reason for social security as well, and exit to longevity, take care of the cola. take care of reducing subsidies in medicare by further means testing premiums which exist today at a premium for part a. consolidate the premiums for all three of the programs. and then there is further means testing that could actually be done in social security through progressive indexing in things like that. those are things that have been talked about around town and the policy communities. you could do a bil
